Mikel Merino

Mikel Merino is Gold Soccer Awards’ Best Substitute of 2026, recognised for his exceptional ability to change games when introduced from the bench.

His impact for Arsenal during the 2025/26 season was impressive, scoring six goals across all competitions despite starting only 18 matches. He combined intelligent movement, physical presence and a remarkable instinct for decisive moments.

His performances for Spain at the 2026 World Cup elevated him further. Merino scored two crucial late winners after coming on as a substitute, against Portugal in the Round of 16 and Belgium in the quarter-finals. Few players made such a decisive contribution to their country’s campaign.

The finalists

PSG’s Bradley Barcola impressed with his pace, direct attacking play and 17 goals across all competitions in 2025/26. Atlético Madrid’s Alexander Sørloth also deserves recognition, scoring 13 La Liga goals and providing a powerful attacking option. Both had excellent seasons, but Merino’s game-changing impact makes him the clear winner.

Three exceptional players, but Merino takes the crown.
